How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
English is one of the careers helpful in any field I chose to go into, but it was especially so in pursuing a master’s in library science. The coursework for the degree gave me a solid background in literature and writing, which I found useful in helping students research sources for projects.
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
Majoring in English enriched my life by training me to look deeper than the surface of people, places and events. Sometimes there’s nothing below the surface, but other times, there’s a whole new world to explore and learn.
What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?
I love all aspects of books, reading and writing, so you would think it’s a natural for me to progress into library science. But I didn’t choose it as a career path until I had almost completed my undergraduate degree in English at VSU, and at the time, VSU didn’t have a library science program for me to transition into for my master’s. English gave me a strong base to pursue my master’s in library science, but almost any degree offered at VSU is a doorway into libraries. There are libraries focused on science, law, history, politics and so much more in addition to public and school libraries. My best advice is to pursue what you love, and your work won’t seem like work.
